When is the next bitcoin halving?
The next bitcoin halving is expected around April 2028, at block 1,050,000. The block reward then drops from 3.125 to 1.5625 BTC per block. This is an estimate: the exact date depends on how quickly new blocks are found.
Rough estimate from September 28, 2026, assuming the protocol target of 10 minutes per block; the countdown below is recalculated live in your browser with the real block height.

What is a bitcoin halving?
Miners who add a new block to the bitcoin blockchain receive newly created bitcoin as a reward. Every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years, that reward is cut in half. This is written into bitcoin's code and happens automatically, without anyone having to decide it.
Because of the halvings, fewer new bitcoin are created over time, until the maximum of 21 million is reached around 2140. After the next halving, about 225 new bitcoin will be created per day instead of about 450 (at 144 blocks per day).

Dates in UTC. The reward is in BTC per block.
What happened after previous halvings?
After the halvings of 2012, 2016 and 2020, the bitcoin price reached a new cycle peak roughly 12 to 18 months later, followed by a deep fall to the next cycle bottom. That is the pattern behind the well-known four-year cycle.
Three or four cycles are far too few to draw firm conclusions. The halving is known years in advance, and the price is also driven by other factors such as interest rates, liquidity, ETFs and regulation. Past cycles are no guarantee for the future and this is not investment advice.
Future halvings (approximate)
| Block | Expected around | Block reward |
|---|---|---|
| 1,050,000 | ± 2028 | 1.5625 |
| 1,260,000 | ± 2032 | 0.78125 |
| 1,470,000 | ± 2036 | 0.390625 |
| 1,680,000 | ± 2040 | 0.1953125 |
Years assume an average of about 10 minutes per block. The reward keeps halving every 210,000 blocks until it rounds down to zero, around the year 2140. From then on miners only earn transaction fees.
About this page & FAQ
When is the next bitcoin halving?
Around April 2028, at block 1,050,000. The exact day depends on the block times between now and then; the countdown on this page recalculates it continuously.
What will the block reward be after the next halving?
1.5625 BTC per block, half of the current 3.125 BTC. With about 144 blocks per day, new supply falls from roughly 450 to roughly 225 BTC per day.
How is the halving date estimated?
The number of blocks still to go until block 1,050,000 is multiplied by the average time per block since the halving of April 2024. The current block height comes from mempool.space. Because block times vary, the estimate can shift by days or weeks.
How many halvings will there be?
The reward halves every 210,000 blocks until it becomes so small that it rounds down to zero, around the year 2140. After four halvings so far (2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024), the fifth is expected in 2028.
Does the price always rise after a halving?
No. After previous halvings the price did rise strongly within one to one and a half years, but that is based on only a few cycles and is no guarantee. This site shows information, not investment advice.
